When Boom Kids! first started the Muppets line of comics, I thought it was brilliant! That first series when above my (and to be honest most of the reader’s) expectations and really set both a precedent and a standard for other Hensen-related titles to be published. And published they were – a now ongoing monthly as well as volumes of limited series of literature adaptations (perhaps what the Muppets do best). But as Boom Kids! has added more and more titles behind the Muppets branding, I have had a small nudging at the back of my geekish mind that sometime soon, the creative juices will run out and genius behind these books will dry up… but what Muppet Sherlock Holmes has shown is that there is no drought yet!
Issue #2 reads well right after after #1 or as a stand alone. The writing captures everything that is beloved from the Muppet Show. The slapstick and visual shtick is there it’s almost a involuntary response to moan out loud when reading at some of the gags. And while that is nothing less than enjoyable, the bits that I found downright engaging were they subtle pieces of background dialogue that you might miss if you blink or were in a hurry to turn the page. The art is outstanding and is a great two dimensional representation of some of the most loved characters of all time!
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for good family fun in comic form – it doesn’t get much better than this!
