Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #1
Based on the television series created by Joss Whedon, Serenity: Leaves on the Wind follows in the wake of the movie “Serenity” which followed the original series’ finale. With a script that flawlessly falls in stride with the aftermath of the Serenity movie this series is primed to fill the void in the hearts of Firefly fans everywhere.
There will be no spoilers to be had in this review; as a diehard Browncoat myself I can only offer my assurances that this is the series that we, fans of the Firefly series, have waited for. When last we left the crew of the Serenity, life had been turbulent and tense, and things have not gotten any better. Still reeling from the events of the Serenity movie, the series picks up with all the personal and political tension that you would expect to follow in the wake of the revelation of just what the cannibalistic society of marauding psychopaths known as the “Reavers” are, and where they came from.
Space is a big black place and the gap between worlds is considerable, so what will the crew do next? Will they hide from the Alliance and hope the truth will boil over on its own? Will they lick their wounds and mope in the face of the devastation their own crew has faced? What about Zoe and Wash’s unborn baby? Alright, when you line the questions up like this it’s starting to sound like a soap opera, but it’s not! It’s the story of a crew that’ll take whatever jobs they have to, legal or otherwise, to keep flying.
As Kaylee would put it, this comic is “Shiny”. It scratches every itch and fills as much of the “Bring Back Firefly” itch as it can within the medium, it may not be the return of the series to television, but it’s the return of the series to the fans, and that’s more than good enough for me. This will be a series to follow, without a doubt.
