If your like me and have a pretty tight comic budget, then you can’t get all the tie-ins to any big crossover event.  So what ends up happening is all my awesome comic friends end up lending me the books that I can’t afford to pick up new.  The result is that I tend to read things a few weeks late and tend not to post reviews.  In the case of Blackest Night: Superman the story is just too good to not post something.

The story so far is taking place in Smallville where Clark, Conner, and Martha are enjoying having Connor back in the family.  The little family reunion is cut short when a risen Kal-L , Earth 2 Superman, decides to pull a Superboy-Prime and decides that our Kal-El needs to go down.

Of course a big fight ensues between Superboy, Superman, and Superman of Earth 2.  Bing bang boom..and a few more “risen” and issue one closed leaving the readers drooling for more.

It’s a crisis in Smallville as Psycho Pirate attacks! Plus, Superman’s dead bride returns as a Black Lantern! And she joins in on the haunting of Smallville in the second part of this terrifying 3-issue epic from writer James Robinson (SUPERMAN, STARMAN) and artist Eddy Barrows (TEEN TITANS, ACTION COMICS)!

Issue #2 opens with both the throw down of the Supermen and a risen Psycho Pirate terrorizing the people of Smallville.  Seeing the people of Smallville turn on each other was really the first time, for me anyway, that I really got a change to see the havoc that Psycho Pirate can inflict.  I don’t believe that I’ve seen then in the past years.

The big moment for me in this issue came in end when Ma Kent shows that a Kansas farmer’s wife is made of some pretty stern stuff.  “It’s On” indeed!

The writing in both these issues and down right  awesome!  James Robinson made have taken some time off from comics t recharge his batteries, but he must have recharged them with nuclear power because he has taken the Superman books by storm.  All great stuff.
