What if I told you that this comic is about the resurrection of Dracula by some unsuspecting, yet brilliant young academic. Can you imagine what the story details are? If you are like me and perhaps have seen your fair share of vampire movies, then you have everything down. The eccentric philanthropist… the unearthed ancient relics… the eastern European thugs… and yes, the young linguist who single-handedly can decrypt the ancient spell that will bring Dracula back to life (oh, and by the way he is convinced Dracula got dealt a bad hand by history and was not the monster the myths say he was).
OK, there it was, I vented… going into the issue, I knew exactly what I was going to get. That is not good, but to be honest – it’s about the only thing not good about this comic. The characters (while being familiar arch types) are enjoyable and the reader is able to relate and feel for them. The writing which switches from the modern unearthing to back story on how Dracula originally got defeated flows very well. The art is top-notch, Scott Godlewski has a good eye for showing the horror of a situation without it becoming a splatter book.
This is certainly an above-average attempt, just not an original take on the vampire / Dracula myth.
The Bottom Line: Slightly disappointing, but looking forward to the next issue
Issue Grade: B
