The second story arc starts in this sleeper hit from Boom! The Anchor is one of those rare gems of a supernatural action story where the supernatural element enhances the plot and character development rather than overwhelming and burying it.
A little bit more to the Anchor’s origin is revealed. Satan reveals his plot to attack the Earth. And the Breeder’s final revenge on The Anchor sees fruition. The Black Lips arc moves from character introduction and set-up into the big-picture story proper.
This has far and away become my favorite Hester book. One of his greatest strengths is the perfect tempo plot reveal. He lays out characters and story details with perfect precision that make the reader be curious, but he also gives just enough so we are satisfied and not frustrated (i.e., Lost syndrome). Brian Churilla characteristically keeps the frames strong and minimalist at the same time.
