The Last Days of Animal Man #6 (of 6) (DC – Conway / Batista / Meikis)
Animal Man R.I.P.! Buddy Baker sees only one way to take down the Mirror Master’s daughter Prismatik and her homicidal partner Bloodrage – and even if it works, Animal Man won’t walk away from the fight! Will there be anything left to send home to what remains of his family? This future might not have a future at all…
Alright, maybe I am hit with the nostalgia bug too often. But you take the iconic Jerry Conway and a classic character like Animal Man (who really made one of the only decent adds to 52) and I expected to be blown away again like when I was 13… sadly the book, in particular the cookie cutter ending did not live up to my expectations.
This future timeline story was filled with cardboard versions of future versions of heroes. The future Supes, Bats, Flash all had the same literary voice. The villains were cheesy at best and not very convincing or interesting. Yes, we get Primatik’s family of origin issues – we were hit over the head with them all of the six issues, but he have no idea why or how Bloodrage gains power from people bodily fluids… sort of weird. When the only character that seem half way intriguing is a space whale (future Green Lantern of Earth), you know there are problems.
And when all is said and done, this didn’t really add anything to the Animal Man mythology. 🙁 Big let down.
I tried to like this, I really did. But the bottom line is six issue should have been four and as a trade it might be a decent read but not for more than $10.
issue grade: C
