Action Comics #877 (DC – Rucka / Teles / Ferreira / Ribeiro )
“Nightwing and Flamebird have beaten back Ursa’s first assault. But Round Two is about to begin! Forget brutal – now it gets personal.”
Greg Rucka continues his awesome run on Action Comics with the third part of his “Sleepers” storyline. The basic storyline is that Superman has left Earth and in his absence two Kryptonians, his adopted son Christopher Kent and Thara Ak-Var, have taken up his mission of protecting the citizens of Earth. Posing as two of Krypton’s most famous heroes, Chris and Thara are unraveling a villainous plot that uses Kryptonian sleeper agents. We’re not sure what the plot is just yet, but it involves Zod, and his witchy commander, Ursa. Oh, did I mention that Zod and Ursa are also Christopher’s biological parents?
In the last issue we saw Ursa kicking the tails of Chris and Thara in what looked more like something out of a Chaos comic (may they rest in peace). Chris and Thara, as Nightwing and Flamebird, have taken out one of Ursa’s sleeper agents. Ursa came to make sure that the sleeper didn’t leak any info….by killing him. Open on this issue with Ursa digging her way out of a cave-in, and Chris bringing Thara’s bleeding body to Lois for help. A series of events later, the government know Thara is Flamebird, Chris is attacked by a US fighter jet, and we see two Kryptonians rob a bank.
I was very hesitant with DC doing another “World Without Superman” so soon after the last one. But i have to say that bringing on the top notch talent of Greg Rucka and Sidney Teles make this venture well worth it. I’m not saying this is a great permanent setting, but it certainly works for now.
