Ultimate Fantastic Four #59 (Marvel – Ferry / Pokaski / Kirkham / Wynn)
Ultimatum has hit the planet hard and the Baxter Building was ground zero. Johnny is still missing. Dr. Storm is dead. And Reed has taken off to parts unknown. Sue’s life hangs in the balance and rests in the hands of untested pilot Ben Grimm, a.k.a. The Thing, and Dr. Arthur Molekevic, now better known as the megalamonical Mole Man. “Journey to the Center of an Invisible Woman” begins!
This issue didn’t do much for the Ultimatum event itself, but I think this is the preface for some of the aftermath. The Mole Man and Ben Grimm get all Issac Asimov as they shrink down and try to find out what is wrong inside of Sue Storm.
I truly though this would be a complete filler issue… Wrongo!
First, there is a great set-up for Ben Grimm to be a part of some government taskforce to deal with global threats… Ultimate Avengers? So, the Thing is going to be a part of one of the post-Ultimatum Ultimate Universe books… way to go Ben! The second big reveal is that there was nano-technology inside of Sue that was put there by Reed that he has never shared with anyone why he put there. And Sue is pissed!
Like I said, this penultimate issue was much better than I predicted and leaps better than the last issue. The writing kept the reader interested in every page and really plugged-in. Too bad the whole series was not as fresh and interesting as this.
