Ultimatum #1 (of 5) (Marvel – Loeb / Finch / Miki / Firchow)
The end is here! Or, is it a new beginning? Massive climatic disturbances are wreaking havoc with the planet — underwater volcanic eruptions, tidal waves crashing over whole cities and snowstorms burying entire countries—and even the assemblage of the Ultimate U’s mightiest is no match for this worldwide destruction! Featuring Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Ultimates, the Hulk and more, find out whose lives are at stake in this defining moment of truth for the Ultimate Universe. Brought to you by award-winning scribe Jeph Loeb and superstar artist David Finch, this is the must-have book that will set the stage in the Ultimate U for years to come. If you want to get in on the most astounding changes taking place in all of comics, this is the place to be. You have been told!
So this is where it has all be heading? This is the beginning to the end? They might have called this a prologue or teaser and given it a $.99 cover price rather than $3.99
Don’t get me wrong, was it fun watching out the UMU characters react when Manhattan is flooded and there is world-wide global weather-based catastrophe? Sure it is! Watching Reed react in anger against Namor, who he is sure is behind it. Having Peter and Kitty do their MTV-ish teenage good-byes as they have to go off and be heroes. Seeing the disbelief in Doom’s eyes as Latveria has a new ice age. Even having the Hulk yell at the Ulitimate Watcher for looking at him… yes, all very fun. Very fun indeed!
But nothing that any fanboy going into this didn’t already know. The issue itself ends at the spoiler one page of Magneto on his throne that Marvel sent out a month ago. If you know what the premise of the series is (Magneto having ultimate revenger on the entire Earth becasue his two mutant children were killed by humans) you can jump right into issue #2 without any issues at all. It’s just us with the collector’s disease that will have th need to have the issue.
Issue Grade: B-
