The Twelve #5 (of 12) (Marvel – Straczynski / Weston / Leach / Chuckry)
Tensions rise and heroes come to blows as the time-lost Twelve from the Golden Age find their fundamental beliefs challenged in the world of the 21st Century. Plus; the Origin of the Witness—he’s seen what you’ve done!
The Twelve so far is winning the “Titles about golden age heroes brought to modern age and let’s see how they do” battle. The first act of this 12 part series is done and issue #5 is the intro to the second act. So, as a stand alone, not so hot. But in the context of the big story, it’s pretty good. This issue focused on The Witness (sort of like the shadow except less dramatic… but only a tad) and the Blue Blade, a pompous fencer. Not my favorite characters, so the issue did fall a little flat for me. But the overall story is very solid. I can’t for us to get back to the murdering of the Twelve. This will be the trade to have in 2009. Geek Wife Alert: As soon as she started reading it, my wife was hooked, if you have a non-comic friend, spouse, significant other who you are trying to get to read comics… this is a great series to start them on
Issue Grade: B-
