Howard the Duck #2 (Marvel – Templeton / Bobillo / Sosa / Pereyra) – So in the second installment of Marvel’s updated classic spoof / satire-spouting fowl, we find Howard being the internet’s number one reluctant star. Marvel’s blurb – “Forget Howard the Duck…this is Howard the SUPER-STAR! Howard’s latest short film becomes the internet’s newest viral video phenomenon, and suddenly EVERYBODY wants to shoot at America’s favorite angry duck. But only SOME of them are aiming cameras. And what is A.I.M.’s part in all this, and is Beverly FINALLY wearing clothes again?” Within these pages Ty Templeton takes on gun control, blogs, pseudo-celebrities, talk-shows and media rights and wrongs. His writing is very intelligent, funny, irreverent and regardless of who you are you are bound to take a shot in here somewhere. Juan Bobillo’s penciling is unique and very grabbing to the eye. He is able to mesh both realistic and cartoon-like styles to really add something to this book.
Howard is able to make fun of the world, mock their own characters, be downright goofy and still bring into focus some very real issues. Although I can imagine how this would not appeal to some reader’s sense of humor. Here’s a good test, if you found any part of Stephen Colbert’s I am America (and so can You!) funny, Howard the Duck is right for you. This is yet another example of an under-marketed Marvel book that is worth the cover price.
