DeadHorse #2 (DeadHorse Comics – Grissom / Sloan)

Previously: A reclusive man gets a strange key from his deceased father and must brave a mad world in search of answers. His neighbors, however, have other plans.  Now: A teenage girl runs away from home. Meanwhile, the Gadsworth Company enlists the help of a mythical bounty hunter in their pursuit of the key.

Okay so check this out – a Taranitino-worthy mysterious box, deep-rooted psychological brain washing, political intrigue / assassination, government agents, neighbors who are not what they seem, symbolic dead birds, runaways, a bounty hunter who dresses up like a Sasquatch and writing with a wicked sense of dry humor – all this in the first two issues!

yea, I’m hooked too!

Over the first two issues, the story has slowly unraveled and expanded – offering more and more interest to the reader. It’s really tough to get your hands around – but at $.99 an issue, you aren’t going to go wrong here (buy here).  Indy writer Eric Grissom shows he has the chops here to become a main player in the comic book landscape – DeadHorse has a much higher interest level than what is coming out of the big 2 publishers.  Artist Phil Sloan gives the book a surrealistic sketchy feel that is very much the style of Jeff Lemire, except with a bit more structure -  I enjoyed these two issues from Sloan much more so than anything I have seen recently from Lemire.

The Bottom Line: The best $1.98 (for both issues) you will spend. period. These easily could be sold on the comic shop shelf for $2.99 and be worth it also.
