Fly #1 (Zenescope – Gregory / Eric J / Garcia / Ruffino / Crank!)
What if there was a drug that gave you the power to fly? How far would you go to possess it and who would you hurt to get your next fix? This is the story of Eddie Patron. Eddie was trying to live a normal life. A rundown broken life but a normal life nonetheless. But Eddie has a secret and that secret is coming back to haunt him and his life will never be the same again. From the mind of Raven Gregory, writer of Image Comics THE GIFT, the Wonderland trilogy and The Waking comes the latest brand new ongoing tale of horror and first tale of a world where the superheroes aren’t heroes at all.
Raven Gregory has an incredible track record as a writer in the comic industry – let alone as someone who has written such volumes within the indie ranks. He is consistently impressing readers and a compelling “balls to the wall”-type story is his norm. Fans expect a lot out of Gregory and with “Fly” his new creator-owned series, he doesn’t let them down. After reading the first two issues, “Fly” reads and feels like a dark, gritty version of the good part of Heroes and Smallville.

The plot of the first issue of Fly follows the story threads between two different character tracks (which I will assume somewhere down the road will cross) – a filthy rich yet nerdy juvenile deviant and his new found protector and a couple who has broken up but the jilted super-powered girlfriend is having anger issues. Both story set-ups are brilliant and both will leave the reader hungry for more “Fly”. Not unlike other really good sci-fi tales – there is a plot with a plot here. While the structural story is set around a drug that gives people amazing powers, the true tale appears to revolve around addiction and the devastation it can bring to a person and everyone they come in contact with. Fly promises to be another of Raven Gregory’s series that people will talk about for years to come.
From the layout to the coloring – the Zene-Alumni laced art team does outstanding at the task of visually framing Gregory’s tale. I never tire of checking out the eye candy that comes from the likes of Eric C, Mike Garcia and Nei Ruffino.
The Bottom Line: This debuts tomorrow – put it at the top of your pull list!
Issue Grade: a high flying A
