Wulf #1 (Atlas Comics / Ardden Entertainment – Niles / Jones)
Here’s what Ardden co-president Brendan Deneen wrote about the title: “Wulf will be about a barbarian who is transported by an evil sorcerer to the present day. While dealing with this strange new world, Wulf finds himself being hunted by a police officer named Lomax and also discovers that the sorcerer has followed him to the modern era, realizing how much more powerful he can become here.”
You know, for a reboot from a 70′s series about a fantasy warrior being transported to modern day to fight a sorcerer on the loose- This is an incredibly sweet book!
In all truth, that premise will shut down some from even opening the cover – if you are one of these masses, fight your instinct, open the cover – read the pages within and let Steve Niles blow you away! This “origin” first issue will absolutely draw any reader in and make them salivate and wait until issue #2!
We get introduced to both protagonists – one an ancient witch-hunter / warrior and the other a modern down-on-your-luck police detective and the evil baddie who will open the portal and bring the two heroes together. Niles really nails this genre – after reading this, I immediately wanted to pull out some of my old Robert E. Howard novels.
The Bottom Line: This is a classic and beautifully written “fantasy” narrative and coupled with Nat Jones’ gorgeous interiors – this book is a no-lose!
Issue Grade: A
