28 Days Later #19 (Boom! – Nelson / Aragon)
Britain is destroyed. The U.S. Military is trying to re-build. Someone in their ranks have their sights on Selena. Can Clint and Selena survive the Infected while also being hunted down by a rogue agent? You’ll know by the end of this pulse-pounding issue of the horror series that continues to shock fans everywhere!
This ish is one of those “behind the story” issues – not a whole lot goes on.
It’s definitely not a throwaway – it’s simply explaining what has happened and is giving the set-up for the next arc, possibly the creative team is taking a pause for new readers to jump on. I still feel Nelson is delivering a solid story, and possibly one of the best plot-driven “survival” serials present on the monthly market. But issue #19 really just boils down to a great deal of word bubbles. This is where we find out why in a world where a highly contagious zombie disease should be your biggest worry, someone is pulling out every stop to find and capture Selena.
Like I said, great story. ‘Nuff said
Unfortunately the new artist Ale Aragon isn’t putting his best foot forward. We should be getting frames and pages that zero in on the emotion and tension of the situation, instead we get strangely scaled and skewed angles with very little detail – almost as if the comic is slightly out of focus. This is an artistic style that can work very well, but I just don’t think it works here.
The Bottom Line: As always I look forward to the adventures of Selena and one slow month will not sway me.
Issue Grade: B-
