Superboy #3 (DC – Lemire / Gallo)
It’s just another day at Smallville High – girl trouble psychic attacks, gym class, lunch with Kid Flash, study hall and alien terrorists from the future!
You know I have to admit, While Conner is not one of my favorite DC characters, this new series is an absolute good time!
When any comic fan thinks of reading that just right creative and fun, light-hearted yet high-adventure superhero comic they get this warm yummy feeling in their gut… In only three issues of writing Superboy, Jeff Lemire has shown he could bottle that feeling.
Jeff Lemire is indeed one of the hot names right now in comics and it’s this type of book that shows why. He has a great feel for the characters, he leaves just the right amount of scale for the readers (balancing between an over-arcing story and reading this issue as a stand alone) and most of all, he writes Conner as a fun lead in a series, rather than an angisty, whiney, messiah-to-be. If Jeff keeps the series for a while, who know I might end up actually liking Conner.
Grade: A-
Bottom Line: Feels a whole lot like old school Young Justice + the first appearance of “Psionic Lad”!
