I was introduced to Grant Morrison’s writings through Animal Man and Doom Patrol. And the truth of it was I loved the man for it. Those titles were and still are brilliant. But over the years, so much like other fans, I dealt with other over-hyped image and the less than stellar delivery and slowly but surely fell out of my infatuation with Grant.
Whether it was his off-target Fantastic Four 1234, or his off-color New X-Men run, or his just bizarre Invisibles series – there was a distinct season of him traveling further and further down my “fav writer” list. Then, in the most recent years came the epically published Seven Soldier series that had virtually no pay-out for the reader, Batman RIP that left most fans pissed at both the writer and DC, then the final straw the oogily Final Crisis series which seemed like an DC inside-joke gone awry than a grand cross-company adventure. In most of the comic shop talk, Grant Morrison had gone from stained once-genius to just a straight out crazed wack-job.
I just read Batman: The Return and Batman Incorporated #1. And the Bottom line is: I have to eat my words!
Morrison’s new take and direction for Bats is incredible, amazing and fits well into the DC continuity (which is usually very hard for a big event). Bruce Wayne has stepped aside for the entire Bat-family to continue in their roles while he attacks crime from a global point of view. In my opinion, this series redeems some of the crap that got handed to reader in RIP and Final Crisis.
Issue #2 of Incorporated comes out in a few weeks – do yourself a favor, give Mr. Morrison another chance and pick it up!
