Chip ‘N’ Dale Rescue Rangers #1 (Boom Kids! – Brill / Castellani)

It’s the return of your favorite furry flatfoots in an all new original ongoing series! Coming on the heels of BOOM!’s bestselling DARKWING DUCK ongoing series, BOOM! brings you another piece of the Disney Afternoon Revolution with CHIP ‘N DALE RESCUE RANGERS. Join DARKWING DUCK writer Ian Brill and MARVEL SUPERHERO SQUAD artist Leonel Castellani as they take the diminutive detectives on all new original adventure! This is the series that will have you singing that song you can never forget: “Sometimes some crimes go slipping through the cracks. But these two Gumshoes are picking up the slack. There’s no case too big, no case too small, when you need help just call —Ch-ch-ch-Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers!”

Rescue Rangers has always had a special place in my geek heart as being one of the best cartoons of the late 80′s.  The show was ranks ahead of its competition because of it’s chemistry of well-known and new characters and its fusion of comedy and action.  The creative teams at Boom Kids! has come through again with a comic book adaptation that maintains the heart and soul of the original chemistry and direction.

The premier issue gives direction to the first story arc where the Rangers are trying to stop a world-wide attack of  “crazed animals” while also providing some origin / background info on Gadget, Monterey and Zipper (the three non-traditional Disney protagonists).  Ian Brill does a pretty good job of capturing the action and excitement of the animated series and then being able to express it through the two dimensional medium.   For me though, the art was standout! While I am not a fan of Marvel’s Superhero squad (not a hater, just doesn’t do anything for me) Leaonel Castellani does an amazing job, primarily through his use of colors, here of really creating a Disney-esque sense of beauty and adventure!  It really surprised me how aesthetic this issue was.

The Bottom Line: A great book for fans new and old!
