Dracula: The Company of Monsters (Boom! – Busiek / Gregory / Godlewski)
It’s bloodsuckers vs. bloodsucker, as Busiek brings an incredibly modern spin to the Dracula mythos! Evan races to discover his uncle’s plans for the immortal vampire as Conrad plans for a hostile and bloody takeover! Having convinced the corporation that he’s at their mercy, Dracula schemes to bring down the company from within. Don’t miss this pulse-pounding conclusion to the first arc of the ongoing horror series from the mind of Kurt Busiek!
While Boom! puts out dozens of incredible books, this has been one of my very favorites! A well-laid out intelligent action / horror book that isn’t just using the name Dracula to try to sell it’s book, the authors (Daryl Gregory and the iconic Kurt Busiek) are putting a modern face on the mythology and (pardon the pun) pumping new blood into the concept.
With issue #4, the intro story arc comes to a close as the final conflict between Uncle Conrad and Dracula comes to a bloody end. Evan has to come to grips with the victor and their dark agenda… oh yeah, and with the family of Romanian vampire hunters who are coming to America bent on revenge. While the conclusion was not wholly unpredictable, the story is written so well and the action of the plot moves at a solid pace, that it is still a very enjoyable ride.
I was introduced to Scott Godlewski’s work for Boom with Code Breakers – loved his work there and loved his work here. A comparison of both series shows that Mr. Godlewski has a wide range of style and he consistently keeps work well above the norm.
The Bottom Line: This ish is out this week and this is one of the few series out there that I have no problem saying is worth the cover price.
