pullbox 3/15

update 4/21/07  It hit me a few weeks ago, that while I love doing these reviews, I am only reviewing those comics that I buy on a weekly basis (I am not a place where I would buy comics I don’t want just to review them).  So, the SB pullbox was very… let’s say.. SB-centric.  I discussed this with the owner of my local comic shop Kowanbunga Comics in Oconomowoc, WI http://www.kowabungacomics.com/
And they are happy to help me out with the problem at hand.  I’m not quite sure how many people actually read this, but from here on in, Strongbad’s pull box will be a little bit more diverse with the help of the folks at Kowabunga Comics.  If you are ever in the South East Wisconsin area, Kowabunga is far and away the cleanest and most family-freindly comic shop I have ever seen… and I have been saying this since I first went in.  Kowabunga has free art lessons, free game demos , all back issues are pre-priced, very freindly service and is happy to do mail order. Smiley

I am going to be throwing up reviews of comics that I get, I will put up a couple at least once a week and I will try to have them not be central to one particular comic company.  Also note, these are coming out of my pull box, doesn’t mean they came out this week, doesn’t mean they didn’t, but it is more likely they came out within the last three weeks

I encourage all comic geeks out there to do the same, throw out reviews so we get an idea of books we might want or not want, feel free to agree / disagree, as I tell my math classes if you have questions / comments /queries, don’t be silent…

Nothing below would be considered actual spoilers – unless of course you haven’t read them yet

She-Hulk # 16  (Marvel – Slott / Burchett / Rathburn) – She Hulk is a blast if you are looking for that non-serious comic in your week.  Dan Slott does an excellent job of tongue-in-cheek humor as we explore the life of Jennifer Walters from a comic viewpoint still within the continuity of the Marvel universe.  The writing is such that if you enjoy Christopher Guest movies, you would love this book.  The art, in my opinion lacks, but still fits the overall feeling of the book.  This Issue: She-Hulk, Wolverine and SHIELD gang tackle the Wendigo in part of the “World Without a Hulk” Story arc.  Given the action and laughs in the issue, it was over way too quick for me.  Best line, after Jennifer has basically hit on Logan and asked him out for a few beers… he tells her he’d rather not go chasing after Juggernaut’s sloppy seconds.

Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters #8 (DC – Palmiotti / Gray / Acuna) – FANTASTIC BOOK! This was part 8 of an 8 part series.  This book takes a fresh look at some old characters post-Infinite Crisis.  This series explores political point of view, the effect of mass media, blindly following leaders and the true meaning of freedom.  This is very much the opposite type of book than She-Hulk.  If you are looking for something to read, have your friends read it then have a hearty round table discussion about, this is it.  The story is well told and the art is great, Daniel Acuna will be giving fanboys someone else to talk about than just the great Alex Ross (no offense to Mr. Ross) This issue: Uncle Sam and his band take down and unmask the alien conspiracy behind President Knight’s objectives and send Father Time on the run.  This conclusion sets up easily another mini-series or a monthly staring the Freedom Fighters.  Definetly worth your time and money either getting the back issues or the trade that we all know is coming soon.

Wonder Woman #4 (Heinberg / Dodson / Dodson) – oh boy, I had high hopes for this series… 14 months ago!  (Dan Dido, if you by chance are reading this… COME ON?!?) While this book has both writing and art talent attached to it, it’s been four issue in 14 months!  From reading it, it seems obvious that they have revamped their direction in this first story arc several times… all four issues have distinctly different flavor to them.  This issue – now the emphasis is on Circe and how she has stolen the Wonder Woman mantle, leaving Diana, Donna and Cassie all powerless… and how all three are using different methods to try to win battle Circe.  Once again we get a cavalcade of villains (feels like a Batman movie from the 90’s) and no real direction.  One day this might be worth getting from your local library in trade.  This one will be coming off the pull list soon.
